Riverside Regional

By Ken Monzingo
Tournament Chairman

The popular Riverside Regional, again in the beautiful new Convention Center, returns for Super Bowl week, January 29-February 4. We have two great hotels ready to house you: Marriott Riverside at the Convention Center, and Hyatt Place Riverside. Check the ad inside for the amazing bridge rates at these great hotels.
Warning: if you want to stay at either (Hyatt $120 or Marriott $115), they may be sold out of our bridge rate now, or very, very soon. You could try for a reservation online.

Bill's Back Burner

By Bill Grant
D22 President

We've seen some very nice, big tournaments in our district lately, the most prominent of course being the just-concluded 11,747 ½-table San Diego Fall NABC (not a district undertaking, but chaired by outgoing District 22 Director Ken Monzingo). And we've had two very successful district results: our September Orange County Regional chaired by Ron Lien (co-chair Bob Micone) and our Ventura Halloween Regional chaired by Diane Gunther (co-chair Jan Wickersham). Master Solvers Panel

Thanks to problem solvers: Bart Bramley, Paul Ivaska, Jill Meyers, Alan Mould, Rick Roeder, Bill Rosen, Jim Tritt, and David Weiss. The problems this month are from the last few boards of the finals of the Bermuda Bowl contested earlier this year. France (Bessis, Combescure, Lorenzini, Quantin, Rombaut, Volcker) had just extended their lead over the United States (Fleisher, Grue, Martel, Moss, Pszczola, Rosenberg) to 33 IMPs when this situation arose: Read More.....

Points? Schmoints!
& Ho-Hum Hands

“Only an idiot counts points! Why don’t you learn to use your head?”

Dorothy Hayden (Truscott) was one of the greatest bridge players - ever. She won four world bridge championships and 26 North American Championships. No wonder she is in the Bridge Hall of Fame. She famously used the expression, “Points, Schmoints!” in her title for chapter seven of her best-selling book Bid Better, Play Better. Marty Bergen later used it as the title for a whole book (also a best seller). Mrs. Hayden-Truscott explained that a player dealt and opened 1♥ with this hand: ♠AQ4 ♥A1085432 ♦6 ♣108. His left hand opponent (LHO) passed. Partner raised to 2♥. RHO (duh?) bid 2♠ and the opener bid 3♥. Pass. Pass. Pass. “Even a half-wit could scarcely fail to take ten tricks with this hand,” wrote Dorothy. Read More...

Return on Equity

IIn poker, “equity” is a measure of your likelihood of success. Stated differently, it is the average amount of money that a particular hand would win if the specific situation were repeated a large number of times. Assume you are dealt two aces (the best possible starting hand) and your opponent is dealt 7-2 unsuited (the worst possible starting hand). You are at a great advantage. Your equity is large. Your opponent’s equity is small. What you actually win is the return on your equity. A poker player with a good hand will bet to protect his equity. A poker player with little equity will likely fold. Read More....
