Pam HughesDistrict 21 Regional Report

Hi all! Hope you’re enjoying the Holidays! You know what the best part is? Right after they wind up, we all go to Monterey for the Clambake Regional. It’s many people’s favorite tournament of the year, for good reason!
In 2018 we are lucky enough to be able to hold five (rather than our usual four) regionals. I want to get the details to you so you can get these wonderful tournaments on your calendar.
In April, we’re going back to Modesto (April 9-15). I know a lot of you missed out on this tournament last year, but those in attendance loved the playing site, and the plaza of restaurants within a short walking distance. The schedule and booking information is on our district website:www.d21acbl.com
A word of caution: because we had so many cancellations last year, the hotel is not giving us many rooms. There will also be a non-refundable one night charge, and a 50% penalty for leaving early. Don’t let that dissuade you, just be sure of your exact dates before you book.
There will also be overflow places (watch our website), but you can get amazing deals online for hotels in Modesto, and there are loads of them.
We’re offering “Choice” Pairs in Modesto for both the open and Gold Rush Pairs games. Basically it’s a three session event, but you choose which two sessions you wish to play. There are also loads of teams games. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
The schedule is on the website. The phone number on that first printing of the flyer is incorrect. It’s 209 526-6000.
It’s not too early to book for Sacramento! The California Capital Regional is one of our most popular. The hotel sells out fast! So make your plans and give them a call 916 929-8855, or book online from our link on the website.
Next up: The All-Western Championships at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. Also a favorite and a staple for many people around the country, we love it so much that we’re keeping a toehold in this very expensive area. Room rates have gone up, but are still far better than you’ll find for a four star hotel in that area. The rate drops on Thursday so you can always plan to play Thursday through Monday. The tournament dates are August 28-September 3.
Last but not least is our Second Annual Reno Regional. The Nugget is a great venue, the playing space is light and airy, and the rooms in the newly remodeled Resort Tower are lovely. There will be more info on this regional as it draws near, but get the dates on your calendar: October 8-14.
One final thing: thank you so much to everyone who bought “I Just Wanna Play Bridge” shirts, or made donations to the Brian Haley Education Fund. We’ve had a few bank changes and it’s caused a delay in getting that account opened, but now all is well and I’m going to start this fund up! We still have a few shirts and will have them for sale in Monterey.
Also, donations to this worthy cause are much appreciated. Checks can be made out to District 21, with Brian’s Fund on the memo line. You can mail them to me (email me for my street address), or give them to me or one of my tournament staff at any of our regionals.
Best Wishes to all of you! Hope to see you soon.
