Ron’s Review

By Ron Lien
District 22 President

District 22 is doing well. Our six successful regionals – Palm Springs NLM (January), Riverside (Super Bowl Week), San Diego (Easter Week), Orange County (Labor Day Week), Ventura (Halloween Week), and Palm Springs (Holiday Season) – had a table count of 9,922 last year which was down 500 from 10,422 in 2016. Through the efforts of Ken Monzingo, Lamya Agelidis and Nancy Erickson, the wonderful Palm Springs Regional was still the second largest regional in the country in 2017 with 3,386 tables. That was down from 3,931 the prior year due to the previous San Diego Fall Nationals, and the following Glendale Regional. Read More....

The ACBL Board of Governors (BOG) is a 125 person body composed of five members from each of the 25 ACBL districts. The BOG has the authority to require that the BOD reconsider any act that the BOD has taken. The BOG also has the ability to recommend an action to be taken by the BOD. Read More....

Master Solvers Panel

By John Swanson
Lancaster, California

The problems this month are from the Baze Senior Knockout Teams held at the recent Fall Nationals in San Diego. Levine (Wold, Passell, Jacobus, Clerkins – brothers Jerry and Dennis) faced Nickell (Katz, Levin, Rosenberg, Rodwell, Meckstroth) for the title.
They encountered a number of unusual and difficult bidding situations. Our panel (Wafik Abdou, David Berkowitz, Ed Davis, Andrew Gumperz, John Jones, Eric Kokish aka EOK, Roger Lee, Mike Lawrence, Jo Anna Stansby) will provide insight about possible bids.
How would you have fared? Read More.....

The End of a Print Newspaper: Opinion

By Ken Monzingo
Forum Managing Editor

As the life of one of the oldest monthly newspapers in the country (yes, the entire country) comes to an end next month, I look sadly at the loss of this 80-year-old vehicle – Contract Bridge Forum – that has served bridge players in the west since before the birth of ACBL. (Legend and lore have it that under different names the alliances of western bridge organizations predated the founding of ACBL – formed in 1937.) The first publications of the founding fathers of Western bridge went through growing pains and identity names before finally settling on Western Conference and Contract Bridge Forum. Read More....

FUN and a Black Beauty
- LTC, SOT, and QT in Action

On the way to turn in my winning ticket at a recent Tucson tournament (January 5), I overheard the other team discussing what had seemed to me to be a fairly “routine” deal that we had just played. I didn’t want to eavesdrop, so I kept walking. However I saw that they had the cards out and seemed to be questioning how “those guys” (my partner and I) could bid 4♠ on 21 HCP ... and make it? Blackwood

The bridge Blackwood convention was dev-eloped in 1933. It’s a surprise to many players to learn it was created to keep you out of bad slams rather than help you bid good ones. When used properly it’s a valuable tool. Read More...
